Buses in Bangladesh

Dhaka has several major bus terminals serving different routes. Gabtoli handles western destinations, Sayedabad covers southern and southeastern routes including Chittagong and Cox's Bazar, and Mohakhali serves northern destinations like Sylhet. Terminals can be chaotic, so arrive early and confirm your departure point when booking, as some operators use their own counters nearby rather than the main terminal.

AC coach services offer assigned seating, air conditioning, and generally more legroom, while non-AC local buses are significantly cheaper but often crowded with limited comfort. For longer routes like Dhaka to Chittagong or Cox's Bazar, AC coaches are strongly recommended. Well-known operators like Green Line, Shyamoli, and Hanif Enterprise run AC services on major intercity routes.

You can buy tickets at operator counters located at or near major bus terminals, or through the operators' own offices in advance for popular routes. Some larger companies also sell tickets online. Booking ahead is wise for AC services during weekends, public holidays, and around Eid, when demand surges and seats sell out days in advance.

The Dhaka to Cox's Bazar journey by bus typically takes around 10 to 12 hours depending on traffic and road conditions, though delays are common. Most AC coach services for this route depart in the evening and arrive the following morning. Road quality has improved in recent years. But congestion leaving Dhaka can add significant time, on weekends and holidays.

Reputable AC coach operators maintain reasonable safety standards on major intercity routes. Avoid overnight local non-AC buses where possible, as driving standards and vehicle maintenance vary widely. Keep valuables secure and in your possession. Road conditions and driving styles across Bangladesh can feel intense for first-time visitors, so choosing established operators over the cheapest option is a worthwhile trade-off.

There is no direct bus to the Sundarbans forest itself. But buses run from Dhaka to Khulna and Mongla, the main gateway towns for Sundarbans tours. From Khulna, you arrange a boat-based tour into the mangrove forest. The bus journey from Dhaka to Khulna takes roughly 8 to 10 hours by road, and several AC coach operators serve this route daily.

AC coach services typically store larger bags in an undercarriage compartment, and you should keep a tag or receipt if one is issued. Space is limited, so one large bag and a daypack is a practical maximum. On non-AC local buses, luggage is often placed on the roof rack, which carries some risk in rain or rough roads. Keep essentials and valuables in a bag you hold with you on board.
