Driving Requirements
A foreign license is legally valid for up to 6 months from the date of arrival. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended. Without one, you may need an official English translation of your home license.
Bangladeshi law sets the minimum driving age at 18. Rental companies typically require drivers to be between 21 and 25 years old, with some allowing 18-year-olds but charging a young-driver surcharge.
Third-party liability insurance is required by law for all vehicles. Rental companies usually offer additional collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection, which are optional but recommended.
Rental companies universally require a credit card in the driver's name for a security hold, or a substantial cash deposit if no card is available. The amount varies by company and vehicle class.
Traffic drives on the left. Roundabouts follow a give-way-to-the-right rule, and honking is common to signal overtaking. Right turns on red lights are generally prohibited unless a sign explicitly allows it.
Helpful Tips
At Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC), counters are inside the terminal but queues can be long; city-center offices in Gulshan or Banani are quieter and often waive one-way drop fees if you return to the same district.
Walk around the car with the agent and photograph existing dents, cracked bumpers, and low-profile tires, many operators still use paper diagrams and may mark damage only in Bangla. Insist on a signed copy before leaving.
Google Maps works for main roads in Dhaka and Chittagong but rural routes and new expressways are missing. Download offline maps in Maps.me or use the local app 'Pathao Drive' which shows police checkpoints and ferry queues.
Most rentals use octane or CNG; stations are plentiful on national highways but scarce in Old Dhaka, fill the tank before returning to avoid high prepaid-fuel charges, as nearly all companies now enforce a strict full-to-full policy.
Paid parking lots labeled 'Car Parking' operate 08:00, 22:00 near New Market and Gulshan-2 (cash only, no overnight); hotel courtyards in Banani or Baridhara allow overnight parking for guests, while street parking in Old Dhaka is risky due to narrow lanes and frequent clamping.
Driving Warnings
At Dhaka's Mohakhali and Gulshan-2 roundabouts, traffic already inside the circle must yield to vehicles entering from the right, opposite of most countries, and failure to yield carries on-the-spot fines.
From June to September monsoon rains turn Airport Road and the Dhaka, Chittagong Highway into axle-deep water with hidden potholes. Driving without headlights on during rain is a ticketable offense.
Traffic on the Dhaka, Narayanganj Old Road and the Mohakhali flyover crawls to a standstill 7, 10 a.m. and 5, 8 p.m.; police barricades at Farmgate and Bijoy Sarani routinely stop cars to check for valid fitness stickers.
Speed cameras are active on the Dhaka Elevated Expressway and on Mirpur Road near Sony Cinema Hall. Exceeding 80 km/h triggers automatic fines and possible license confiscation.
